Wansfell Guided Walk

This walk from Ambleside takes us through Skelghyll Wood, High Skelghyll, Low Fold, Troutbeck, and up to Wansfell Pike - offering a captivating journey through the scenic landscapes of the Lake District. 

Duration/Distance/Elevation: 3.5 hours/7 miles/1500ft

Level: Any - no previous mountain experience is needed, but a reasonable level of fitness will be required.

Age: 13+ - Under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a lead at all times.

A gently challenging ascent of Ambleside's resident summit

Beginning in Ambleside, we'll meander through the enchanting Skelghyll Wood, characterized by its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere. As we ascend towards High Skelghyll, we'll be granted breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and Lake Windermere.


Continuing onwards through Low Fold, we'll saunter through picturesque valleys and quaint hamlets, providing glimpses into rural life in the region. The journey takes walkers through Troutbeck, a charming village nestled amidst rolling hills and snake-like streams, offering opportunities to rest, snack, and re-hydrate.


The highlight of the trek is the ascent to Wansfell Pike just in time for sunset; a prominent peak that rewards hikers with sweeping vistas of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells. The summit serves as a perfect spot simply to soak in the awe-inspiring scenery.


Descending from Wansfell Pike, the trail leads back towards Ambleside, completing a circular route that showcases the scenic beauty of the Lake District. With its blend of woodland paths and quaint villages, this walk is a memorable adventure for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
